Mufti day and Emmanuel Kija

emmanuelwebEvery year we organize a mufti day to raise funds for our World vision child, Emmanuel Kija. But as we leave our
uniforms at home on Friday, we want to raise more than money this year—we want to raise awareness of just who Emmanuel
is and how he lives his life and why we continue to support him.

Emmanuel is 8 years old and he lives in Nkoma, a small community in northern Tanzania, East Africa.

He has 2 sisters and 3 brothers and his family are farmers. It is Emmanuel’s responsibility to help care for the animals.
Although he is learning English at school, Emmanuel speaks mainly Kisukuma and Kiswahili. He likes playing football and his
favourite day last year was his birthday!

...and the money we raise helps!
Our fundraising supports both Emmanuel and the wider Nkoma Community. Villages often lack some of the
basic things we take for granted such as health care, good education and clean drinking water and the money we send each year helps the whole community
to decide how to develop.

In the community each farmer has about 2 hectares of land but with low rainfall and often not enough money to buy
fertilizer, the community has had to develop techniques to get the best

In 2013, when the World Vision project ends in Nkoma the student leaders will consult with other students and identify a new project to support.

The progress made by by the team of students, staff and community mentors on this amazing  'build an aircraft' project is impressive.

The tail section is almost complete, the team are already looking to make a start on the wings and plans are afoot for a trip to Air New Zeland in Auckland.
It is worth keeping a look out for the weekly blog updates on the website and news of further developments.

What lurks in the deep sea?

The work of all scientists focuses on the what and why questions in the world around us and beyond and last night, Y5/6 students were invited to celebrate the science behind 'What lurks in the deep sea? ' question as part of MBAS Primary Science Week activities. An eager group of inquisitive young scientists and their support adults heard about the work of New Zealand scientists and their search for life on underwater volcanoes off the coast, how the deep sea angler fish finds a meal and experimented with sea water solutions and dyes to work out why freshwater might float on sea water.

One of our international students, Konstantin, who is passionate about marine life, delivered a presentation about the collosal squid which was caught off New Zealand and is now exhibited at Te-Papa and everyone got their hands dirty with a dissection of an arrow squid trying to find how how different parts of it's anatomy help it survive in its environment.

It was an evening of discovery and perhaps the start of a new generation of marine scientists at Mercury Bay.

DNA Discovery Day

dna2web dna1web

One of the most challenging parts of teaching is often to make the learning relevant to the lives of the students. One way to achieve
this is to work alongside professionals in the field. Recently, 18 students from Y9 and Y10 had the chance to do exactly this during
a trip to the Liggins Institute at Auckland University. Their mission was to learn about DNA, try some biotechnology techniques not
often carried out in school laboratories and meet face to face with some research scientists.

Students found the day both interesting and enjoyable identifying the opportunity of extracting their own DNA from cheek cells as the highlight!

  • “It was really good when the scientists came in and talked about what they have done”
  • “A great day, learnt heaps and the best part was the practical and using computers”
